The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had allowed a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Unraveling?
Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been a thread holding it together from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, but then he to later acknowledge that the club had not mentioned a registration embargo they were facing for accounting issues. Speculation that his departure was imminent were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining initial five matches, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it has been hard to determine if they're getting better or self-destructing.
Matteo's Surprising Return
One individual kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this season. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his parent club were advocating for him to extend his stay a while longer. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.
He signed in the first place under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."
Finding His True Position
Maybe Sarri was persistently working to identify the specific characteristics of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9.
