European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
