The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
